 Why may you start losing your hair?

5-Alpha-Reductase (5AR) is an enzyme in the body that is involved in DHT Metabolism, a process that converts the hormone Testosterone into Di-Hydro-Testosterone (DHT). Research indicates that DHT is found not only within the hair follicle, but also at the root of the hair shaft (dermal papilla). DHT gets into the hair follicles and them binds inside them (locks into them) in places known as androgen receptor sites. The DHT then causes the follicles to shrink in size and also creates a wax-like substance around the hair roots. It is this accumulation of DHT inside the hair follicles and roots which is one of the primary causes of male and female pattern hair loss.

Proper nutrition is critical in order to maintain strong, healthy hairs. When DHT gets into the hair follicles and roots (dermal papilla), it prevents necessary proteins, vitamins and minerals from bringing nourishment needed to sustain life in the hairs of those follicles. Consequently, the cells in those hair follicles and roots reproduce at a much slower rate. This causes the hair follicles to become smaller and thus shortens their growing stage (anagen phase) and or lengthens their resting stage (telogen phase). Thus the hairs in those affected follicles also become thinner, smaller, weaker and even lighter in color. Eventually those hairs may not grow back at all and they may fall out. When this happens, one may begin to notice a Receding Hair Line in the Front or a small bald spot on the top or back of the scalp. From there, the process of thinning hair and hair loss continues and may progress at an even faster rate, with more hairloss taking place in a shorter period of time.

 Sebum oil, mineral deposits and DHT accumulate on the scalp and inside the hair follicles

Take a look at the picture above on the left. There are two sebaceous glands, one on each side of the hair follicle. Sebum oils are secreted from these glands to lubricate the hair for smooth upward growth and also give the hair shafts their luster and shine. But if the hairs are not strong and healthy (due to the effects of accumulated DHT binding inside them), the sebum oils may also accumulate and harden inside the follicles.
